“People are your greatest asset. As an owner it is my responsibility to find the right people, help them develop and lead them by example.”

Alyson Horton is celebrating her fifth anniversary with ServiceMaster of Seattle, and those five years have been the best years in the history of the franchise . Here, and in honor of Women’s History Month, Alyson shares her proudest achievement, the best career advice she’s ever received as well as advice for other women looking to grow their business.

What’s the best career advice you’ve been given?
The best advice I have been given is that people are your greatest asset. As an owner it is my responsibility to find the right people, help them develop and lead them by example.

What advice do you have for women looking to grow their own business?

The advice I have for other women looking to grow their business is to lean in and do all things with confidence. Mindset is everything and you must believe in yourself and in your abilities to be successful. Project that confidence to everyone around you and never let someone take that from you. No one is right all the time, and that is okay, if you’re wrong take it in stride and roll directly onto the next thing but don’t let it make you falter.

What do you wish more people knew about being a woman in business?
I wish more people knew the strengths that women in business bring. You hear too often jokes or quips about women being ‘too emotional’ or ‘irrational’ however I think it’s quite the contrary. I think women in general tend to be more compassionate and stable leaders. Our egos don’t tend to play as big of a role in our decision making.

What’s an accomplishment or win that makes you especially proud?
The last 5 years for our business have been the best years in our history. I am incredibly proud of the work our team has done and I am so excited to see what the next 5 years bring us. I am coming in as a second-generation owner and I am incredibly grateful to have such a strong foundation that was built by Mike. I grew up watching him pour everything into this business and it is my honor to continue to carry on the legacy of the ServiceMaster of Seattle brand. Maybe one day my own daughter Georgia will want to continue the family legacy even further, we shall see.
