As we start our 94th year as a 3-year-new company, we honor the history, people, purpose and principles that make us ServiceMaster® Brands. Our story begins with the founding of ServiceMaster® in 1929 from where we have grown to a family of nine brands. Today, our company is home to over 3,500 franchisees across 4,900+ locations serving over 1,000,000 homes and businesses each year.
While each brand maintains a distinct identity, we share a commitment to our mission of Making Everyday Heroes More Heroic™. From our franchisee experience to career development to our community outreach efforts, our values – We Serve, We Care, We Deliver, We Do – guide us. Take a walk through our history and learn more about each of our brands.
ServiceMaster® was founded in 1929 as a mothproofing company by Marion E. Wade, a former minor league baseball player and salesman. After being temporarily blinded in an accident, he dedicated himself to a life of service and purpose, saying, “If you don’t live it, you don’t believe it.” Marion’s enduring values and belief in treating people with dignity and respect, still serve as the foundation of ServiceMaster® Brands — one of America’s first franchise businesses.
When Marion E. Wade opened his carpet cleaning business in 1929, he did not yet understand the impact it would have on communities and franchise owners worldwide. ServiceMaster grew beyond its roots, and franchise owners soon took on water and fire damage restoration, mold remediation and more. These additional services evolved into ServiceMaster Restore® which today has a legacy of restoring peace of mind and making homes and businesses whole again.
From healthcare facilities to hotels, schools, places of worship, offices and industrial buildings, ServiceMaster Clean® has been helping keep society’s most essential buildings shining since the 1950s. Business is better when you put your heart into it and raising the standard of clean in industries that help our world go-round is where entrepreneurs like ours thrive.
Merry Maids® founder, Dallen Peterson, once said, “You must put people first.” If you affirm people and build authentic relationships based on integrity, trust, and respect, they will follow you – and so will success.” Now, four decades and over 500 locations later, our residential cleaning service brand continues to honor Dallen’s “people first” legacy in the over 6 million hours per year they spend in the homes of consumers.
TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®
It all started as an after-school business for Mary Ellen Sheets and her two sons in the early 1980s. Now TWO MEN AND TRUCK® is the fastest-growing franchised moving company in the U.S. and the industry’s leading brand. The company has stayed true to its origins, retaining the best-in-class service guided by THE GRANDMA RULE® – treating everyone the way you would want your grandma to be treated.
Property inspections are essential to most real estate purchases, and the majority are ordered by agents. This makes it only natural that California real estate agent Thomas Carroll would create the model for a successful new inspection company called AmeriSpec®in 1987. His commitment to excellence drives our key principle, “More than inspected. AmeriSpec inspected.” Today, AmeriSpec’s national brand is one consumers trust with a coast-to-coast network of 400+ highly trained experts and more than 2 million inspections performed.
They say, “necessity is the mother of invention,” and this holds true for our founder, Joe Lunsford. When his furniture was damaged during a move, Joe couldn’t find a high-quality repair service with a reasonable turnaround time. That’s when, in true entrepreneurial fashion, he decided to open his own. Founded in 1992, Furniture Medic® is a leading wood, cabinet, and furniture repair and restoration company.
Acting as a second responder and the first step toward the healing process, Aftermath® relieves a family’s burden after the end of a tragedy. The Aftermath Way is more than a cleaning regimen. It is a set of values and behaviors we hold ourselves accountable to help families today and grow our ability to help more tomorrow. It is a mindset that families deserve the highest quality service while being treated with dignity and respect.
When Indoor Science founder Ian Cull was studying environmental engineering, he happened upon an internship doing indoor environmental work. He learned that people spent more than 90% of their time indoors and that the built environment can have a larger impact on health than the outdoor environment. Upon further research, Mr. Cull identified an underserved market for independent indoor environmental testing services. As a result, Mr. Cull started Indoor Science in 2004 with the purpose of supporting safety, well-being and productivity of employees and customers.
