“As a black woman, I see myself as a pace-setter for the younger generation, setting an example of what it takes to be resilient and pursue success irrespective of the opposition that lies ahead.”

Mercy Ikeji started as an entrepreneur in Nigeria. In 2023, she purchased her first Merry Maids franchise in Bedfordshire, UK. Here she shares her advice for other hopeful franchise owners, her proudest accomplishment as well as what it means to be the leader of a minority-owned business.

What is your best advice for people who want to open their own business or franchise?
Seek a franchise that has long-term experience and a company that can support you continually.

What about ServiceMaster made it the right company for you and your career?
Their support for the business and their business academy training, as well as ongoing support, and their starter pack is a complete business start-up kit giving you everything you need to start your business.

What does it mean to you to be a black-owned business leader?
Being a black-owned business leader requires lots of courage, boldness, and tenacity. As a black woman, you are faced with so many challenges when starting and growing your business, especially in this part of the world, hence the need for every black business leader to be resilient and focused on her business goal irrespective of the challenges you will face as you venture into owning your business. I believe that with determination and a never-give-up mindset, you can achieve any goal you set for yourself. Black women are known for strength and endurance, which we can bring into our business world as we face diverse challenges ranging from gender issues, skin color and sometimes accent.

As a black woman, I see myself as a pace-setter for the younger generation, setting an example of what it takes to be resilient and pursue success irrespective of the opposition that lies ahead.

What accomplishment are you most proud of as a franchise owner?
I am happy with the launch of our business in Bedford and am hopeful for the best.
