Mastering Talent: Why You Should Always Prepare Questions for Your Interview

Recruiting Wisdom from Pam Rush, Director of Talent Acquisition at ServiceMaster® Brands

One of the most overlooked opportunities in an interview is the moment when the interviewer asks, “Do you have any questions for me?” This isn’t just a polite closing, it’s your chance to show curiosity, preparation, and genuine interest in the role and the company. At ServiceMaster Brands, we value candidates who come ready to engage in meaningful dialogue, not just answer our questions.

Before your interview, take time to research the company, the team, and the role. Then, prepare a list of thoughtful questions that go beyond surface-level details. Ask about team dynamics, growth opportunities, or how success is measured in the role. These kinds of questions demonstrate that you’re thinking critically about how you’ll contribute and grow within the organization.

And don’t worry about repeating a question with multiple interviewers. Asking each person what they enjoy most about working at the company, for example, can give you a well-rounded view of the culture and values. You’ll likely hear different perspectives, and that’s a good thing, it helps you assess whether the environment aligns with your own goals and values.

Saying “I don’t have any questions” can unintentionally signal a lack of interest or preparation. Even if your initial questions were answered during the conversation, follow up with something that shows you were actively listening. A simple “Can you tell me more about…” or “How does your team approach…” can go a long way.

So, before your next interview, take a few minutes to jot down questions that matter to you. It’s a small step that can make a big impression—and help you make a more informed decision about your future.
