West Spring |
Spring brings with it an outburst of insect activity. Homeowners in the West Region need to be aware of several types of activities. Subterranean termites have major swarms in May and June as colonies begin producing winged reproductives that emerge to found new colonies. Swarming usually occurs on warm days following a heavy rain, and if a colony is established nearby it is just a matter of time before the termites attack the home. See our Tips for Control for information on how you can reduce your risks.
Carpenter ants, like termites, swarm during the spring as they seek to establish new colonies. Both of these pests can be extremely difficult to control, so early action is imperative if you see either of these species near your home. Cluster flies emerging from winter hibernation in cracks of crevices of exterior walls may decide to explore your great indoors, while pavement ants can frequently infest garage floors and concrete foundations. Mice will renew their foraging activities and often enter homes during these months.
