Midwest – Fall |
The coming of fall drives rodents such as rats and mice to search for new sources of food as the seeds and grasses they usually feed on become more rare. In addition to the usual threats of infestation from such typical household pests as ants and rodents, many insects that typically remain outside such as box elder bugs and earwigs have discovered that heated buildings are the perfect place to escape the cold of winter. Carpet beetles and clothes moths are also active during these months, and can cause irreparable damage to clothing, carpets, drapes and any other item made of natural fiber. Cluster flies and ladybugs are attracted by the warmth of buildings and will often hibernate there. This can become a problem on warmer fall and winter days, when the insects "wake up" and begin to explore the interior of your home. Yellow jacket colonies remain active well into fall, as do pavement ants.
