Subterranean Termite
Appearance
Workers and soldiers are about 1/8-inch long; supplementary reproductives reach about one inch with rudimentary wings; and primary reproductives are one inch long with wings. Workers, soldiers and secondary reproductives are light in color, while primary reproductives are dark brown or black.

Behavior
Termites swarm, looking for places to establish new colonies.

Habitat
Termites will tunnel into the home in search of food. They need to stay in contact with the soil to survive, and their tunnels look like mud tubes above the ground.

Treatment
Termites can severely damage your home's structure. Prompt professional treatment is required. Risks can be reduced by: keeping firewood, stacks of bricks, etc. away from the home; repairing plumbing leaks to eliminate water sources; not allowing dirt and leaves to accumulate around your home's foundation; and regular painting and use of pressure treated lumber or termite resistant wood such as redwood core, bald cypress, mahogany, and Spanish cedar.
