Drywood Termite
Appearance
Pale brown in color. Soldiers are up to 3/8-inch in length, while
reproductives are 1/2-inch long. During the swarming stage, reproductives
will have wings.
|
|
Behavior
These termites live in large colonies.
|
Habitat
Most often found in attics, where they feed on dry wood. Unlike subterranean
termites, they do not require contact with the ground.
|
Treatment
Professional fumigation
is the most effective treatment. Risks can be reduced by: keeping
firewood, stacks of bricks, etc. away from the home; repairing plumbing
leaks to eliminate water sources; placing 20-mesh screens over doors,
windows and vents; regular painting and use of pressure treated lumber
or termite resistant wood such as redwood core, bald cypress, mahogany,
and Spanish cedar. |
