Appearance
Up to 3/4-inch in diameter, the black widow is usually glossy black
but may also be dark or light brown. The classic red "hourglass" marking
on the bottom of the abdomen does not always occur. Their bite is
painful, and can be fatal to small children and the elderly.

Behavior
Black widows live near the ground where they trap and eat insects.

Habitat
Black widows prefer protected areas such as stacks of boxes, beneath
boards and in firewood.

Treatment
Avoid bites by wearing gloves when moving boxes and other materials
that have been stored for a long time. Because of the risks these
spiders pose, call a professional for extermination. |
