Larger Pests
Larger animals like squirrels, skunks, raccoons, and other wild animals
can cause significant problems for homeowners. According to the pest experts
at Terminix, these
critters are large enough to do major damage to walls, ceilings and other
parts of your home. They also bring in more pests including fleas, worms,
and other parasites. Finally, many of these animals are transmitters of
rabies.
Types of Larger Pests
Squirrels:There are a number
of varieties of squirrels, but they are all basically similar. Problems
arise when squirrels enter attics to nest and breed. They will enlarge
entry holes, and can do serious damage to wooden structures.
Raccoons:These large animals
will raid garbage cans, attack gardens, and can be a threat to small pets.
Raccoons will invade attics, crawl spaces, and garages.
Skunks:Like raccoons, skunks
are attracted to garbage cans, gardens, and other food sources near your
home. Skunks will spray when they feel threatened, and the odor is very
difficult to eliminate.
Pest Prevention
Take these precautions to reduce the risk of squirrel, raccoon, skunk
and other large pests:
- Make sure all garbage cans have lids and are tightly closed. Do not allow trash to accumulate in alleys or yards.
- Cover holes with wire mesh.
- Keep trees and shrubs well trimmed.
- Prevent piles of leaves and other debris from accumulating around your foundation.
