Treating Your Home & Pets for Fleas
Your pets pick up fleas from two sources: primarily from outside, and
occasionally from interacting with other cats and dogs in your neighborhood.
Wild animals traveling through your yard may also deposit flea eggs or
larvae. When fleas infest your home and your pet, it can be miserable
for everyone. By following the advice of Terminix
pest control experts, you can avoid the problems fleas cause both inside
and outside your home.
Flea Control
Launch your flea defense by:
- Applying flea control on your dog as required. It's important to note that puppies six months old or younger, cats, and other animals may not tolerate the highly concentrated ingredients in flea control products.
- Keeping your pets well-groomed with regular baths using a flea shampoo.
- Periodically using a flea spray on your cat. He or she should be combed often.
- Vacuuming frequently in areas where your pet likes to rest or sleep.
When You See Fleas
A trip to the vet or groomer may help your pet be more comfortable after
battling fleas, but it won't rid your home of fleas. Fleas deposit eggs
where your pet rests or sleeps. That means your household will not be
"flea-free" until these eggs and flea larvae are eliminated.
Preparing for Treatment
For maximum effectiveness, before starting any flea treatment program
you should:
- Remove all items such as toys, clothes, and pet food from all floors.
- Remove all items from under beds and closet floors.
- Wash or replace bedding.
- Vacuum all carpets and rugs, including beneath beds. Upholstered furniture should be vacuumed as well.
- Clean all wood, tile, and linoleum floors by sweeping and mopping.
- Clean concrete floors with soap and water.
- Remove all pets, including birds and reptiles. Cover fish tanks with a damp towel and turn off the air pump.
- Replace any pet bedding outdoors and make all shaded areas, crawl spaces and other breeding areas available for treatment.
- Arrange to be out of your home for several hours so your treatment has time to thoroughly dry.
