Commitment to Community

ServiceMaster believes in generously giving back to the communities where our associates live and work, by contributing both financial and volunteer hours in organizations that share our commitment to people, our planet and our future. Examples of our commitment include:

  • Over the last four years 1,700 ServiceMaster associates have volunteered over 9,600 hours to help Habitat for Humanity build four houses in Memphis, Tenn.
  • Partnering with professional basketball player, Shane Battier, ServiceMaster has embarked on a $1.3 million commitment to provide a free franchise license, free training, marketing support and more to promote business ownership among women and minorities.
  • ServiceMaster is a longtime supporter of the Memphis-based Metropolitan Inter-Faith Association (MIFA) and a primary sponsor of the organization’s annual Day of Reflection and Service, which is held to commemorate the life and works of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
  • ServiceMaster was the presenting sponsor of the Annual Mayor's Day of Service in Los Angeles. In Carroll, Iowa, associates contributed more than 180 volunteer hours in 2009 towards New Hope Village, a not-for-profit, community-based facility that serves individuals with disabilities.

Commitment to the Environment

ServiceMaster is committed to common sense, science-based public policy that helps protect our environment and raises the standards for operation within our industries. Some of the initiatives we have undertaken include:

  • Outreach efforts to educate consumers on the environmental benefits of lawn care and the responsible use of herbicides and pesticides.
  • Introduced a pesticide product that helps reduce the amount of synthetic chemicals used within the home. The fast-acting spray uses 100 percent natural active ingredients to eliminate up to 25 insect varieties on contact.
  • Developed an energy-saving insulation which also serves as a barrier to pests. A single 1,500 square foot home insulated with the R-Plus Insulation will use as much recycled newspaper as a typical family would throw away in 40 years.
  • Through our Termite Inspection and Protection Plan we saved the application of approximately 6 million gallons of termiticide in 2009.
  • Through energy audits we helped more than 50,000 homeowners find ways to reduce wasteful energy consumption.
  • From 2008 to 2009 ServiceMaster’s vehicle fleet (more than 15,500) cut gasoline and diesel consumption by 862,000 gallons – the equivalent of 16 million pounds of carbon dioxide emissions.
  • Our horticulture experts deploy techniques such as xeriscaping, a landscaping method that focuses on drought tolerant plants that thrive with minimal watering.
  • Our professionals provide water-saving advice to home and business owners to help reduce the amount of water needed for a healthy lawn or landscape.
  • We are concerned about issues such as water quality, water conservation, turf management and soil erosion and therefore work with a variety of groups to protect our environment by:
    • Promoting standards to reduce the use or phosphorous fertilizers.
    • Mandating that any fertilizer on sidewalks and driveways be returned to the container or swept up and applied to turf grass.
    • Establishing clear buffer zones near waterways and other environmentally sensitive areas.
    • Supporting efforts to avoid blanket application of pesticides.
